The good news of the budget law… with some question marks in development cooperation

Investments in Cooperation: the 2017 budget law seems to translate Prime Minister Renzi’s intentions well, establishing an increase of 120 million in funds for the Cooperation Agency (AICS) and a new fund for Africa.
It had been ten years since such a substantial reversal had been seen. But some points remain open.
Beyond the budget law, however, clear choices are needed and this is the task of politics. Clear, transparent, understandable to all and with long-term strategies. It seems that the government’s choices regarding development cooperation, despite real and appreciable intentions and efforts, still lack clarity and therefore coherent decisions.
