Immigration and asylum, institutions listen to civil society

«Politics», writes Nino Sergi, president emeritus of the humanitarian organization Intersos, and policy advisor of LINK 2007, «has not been able to look at the reality of immigration for what it is and what it will be, giving itself the necessary tools to govern it in the best possible way . Only the desired, true comparison, also open to the clash of ideas and proposals but attentive to the reasons of others, can help outline a renewed policy for an immigration government that is at the same time fair, supportive, safe, effective and advantageous for Italy»

Nino Sergi sent a letter to the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi with the subject “ Government of immigration. Proposal for a National Conference ”.

« Politics», says Sergi, «has shown impressive limits, real blindness . He hasn’t been able – worse, he hasn’t wanted to – to look at the reality of immigration for what it is and what it will be, giving himself the necessary tools to govern it in the best possible way. The preconceived, unjustified and irrational refusal to adopt the UN Global Compact on Migration as simple guidelines is one of the most humiliating examples, together with the permanent attitude of victimhood in European relations”.

“Civil society organizations have rightly reacted to any closure considered unjust or instrumental to other political ends but have not always managed to establish”, continues Sergi, “even with sensitive political forces, that indispensable and permanent constructive dialogue, severe but of mutual listening with the will to understand and deepen the respective opposing reasons, which could have led to better results. Only the desired, true comparison, also open to the clash of ideas and proposals but attentive to the reasons of others, can help outline a renewed policy for an immigration government that is at the same time fair, supportive, safe, effective and advantageous for Italy”.
