LINK 2007: MATTARELLA’S GESTURE RECONCILES WITH THE INSTITUTIONS

01/03/2023

President Sergio Mattarella paid tribute to Crotone to the victims of the shipwreck a few tens of meters from the beach of Steccato di Cutro which cost the lives of the 68 people ascertained to date. Many children, mothers, fathers, young people fleeing from serious danger situations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Syria and seeking protection in the hope of better living conditions.

His presence at the San Giovanni di Dio hospital where the people injured in the shipwreck are hospitalized, his meeting with the children who survived the tragedy by giving them toys, his recollection in front of the 67 coffins placed in the sports hall, listening to relatives of the victims, thanks to the health personnel, to the mayors of Crotone and Cutro and to the communities that welcomed the shipwrecked and who are now asking for “justice and truth” are gestures that reconcile citizens with republican institutions .

The judicial investigation will take its course to ascertain responsibility and respond to the need for “justice and truth” expressed by the citizens of Crotone also in the name of many Italians who were shocked by the avoidable shipwreck. Today we want to remember the image of love, emotion and dignity that Crotone has been able to express with the many flowers brought daily to the sports hall and those placed on each coffin, the puppets in front of the children’s white ones. Dignity that must remain an example for everyone.

“This tragedy must not leave us indifferent” President Mattarella immediately affirmed after the shipwreck, urging “a strong commitment from the international community to remove the root causes of the flows of migrants; wars, persecutions, terrorism, poverty, territories made inhospitable by climate change ” and the indispensability “that the EU finally assumes concrete responsibility for governing the migratory phenomenon in order to remove it from human traffickers, directly engaging in  migration policies , in the support for cooperation for the development of countries from which young people are forced to leave due to lack of prospects”.

“Let’s make Mattarella’s words our own”, says the president of LINK 2007 Roberto Ridolfi . “In our commitment as an NGO of solidarity and international cooperation, which unites us to many other realities that act concretely and directly both in Italy and in emigration and refugee countries, we will work to ensure that they can be implemented. Even if human mobility cannot be stopped, as centuries of history demonstrate, including the Italian one, the renewed announcement of development plans for the poorest countries, above all for reasons of equity and justice , is certainly an encouraging sign. Hoping it doesn’t remain a set of words in the wind once again .Recalling that the seriousness, reliability and coherence of the institutions remain fundamental to be able to nourish our democratic system”.

The EU should undoubtedly do more and make commitments in migration policies. But the governments refer to a European unity of purpose that does not exist. Not because the EU doesn’t know how and doesn’t want to act, but because the member states and their sovereign governments don’t come to an agreement. The European Union is not a federal state but an entity based on treaties and agreements between states which intend to safeguard their own sovereignty and their own, sometimes opposing, interests. In order to be able to ask Europe to act, a renewed vision is needed which leads to the start of a federal path with a progressive transfer of areas of sovereignty to the EU . Starting with migration policies.
